The aim of creating of the Kharkiv social and economic Institute is to train specialists in the field of social work, organizing of work and economics of enterprises.

To realize this goal there is a skilful staff: doctors and candidates of social, economic, technical, historical, philosophy and psychology science.

The institute was created in 1932. It is a basic educational establishment within the system for training officials for governing bodies and organizations of Ukrainian trade unions. As the social and economic Institute it was based on the Ukrainian branch of the Moscow Academy of Labor and Social Relations.

Dubrovsky M.L., the Rector of the institute, professor, candidate of historical science has been working with the trade union training system since 1974. The directions of scientific activity include the history of international and Ukrainian trade union movement, theory and practice of social partnership, social conflictology.

Now the Institute has the 3-d accreditation degree (Ministry of Education and Science of Ukraine license AA № 902970 20.04.2004) and it is a member of International Staff Academy which a constant participant of various international conferences on the problems of education, employment, labor and staff and social policy, material and technical basis of the institute allows arranging studies at the level of modern educational technologies.

The library provides literature not only on general subjects but on sociological and economic studies; psychology, conflictology and social work as well. The funds of the library are constantly increasing.

Modern computer classes provide basis of professional training. Students are taught English, German, French. Foreign language rooms are supplied with modern video and audio techniques.

There are four faculties: economic, social partnership, professional development of trade union cadre, post-graduate training.

KhSEI provides professional training on specialties:

Social workers acts in system of state social policy and can work as officials of Ministry of Labor and Social policy, pension funds, committees, trade union bodies, centers of youth activities, social psychology and ecology centers, employment agencies and other institutions of social scientific and educational fields. Graduates can also work in tourism and excursion quarters at domestic and international level.

Specialists in economics are able to be in the field of penning economic management, analytical and scientific activities. Training in accountancy audit and labor management increases competitive abilities of the specialists on the labor market.

Provide education on specialties "Economics of enterprises" and "Social work" on the basis of diploma.

There are distance and full time training.
